Your Google Business Profile: the free tool most owners get wrong
For local searches, your Google profile beats your website. Here's how to set it up so you show up on the map, and keep showing up.
When someone nearby searches "electrician near me" or "best hair salon in town," Google doesn't show them ten websites. It shows a map with three businesses pinned on it. Being one of those three is worth more than any amount of website polish, and it's completely free. The catch is that almost everyone sets it up once, badly, and forgets it.
Claim and complete every field
Google rewards completeness. An empty profile is invisible. Fill in everything:
- Exact business name, address and phone, identical to how they appear everywhere else online
- Correct primary category, plus relevant secondary categories
- Opening hours, including holidays
- A real description of what you do, in the words your customers use
- Services or products with short descriptions
Photos do the selling
Profiles with real photos get dramatically more clicks and calls than those without. Not stock images, your actual premises, your team, your work. Add a few every month so Google sees an active, living business.
Reviews are the ranking fuel
Quantity, quality, recency and your replies all feed your local ranking. Ask every satisfied customer, make it one tap to leave a review, and reply to every single one, yes, even the critical ones. A calm, helpful reply to a bad review impresses the next reader more than a wall of five stars.
Post like it's a social channel
Most owners don't know the profile has a Posts feature. Offers, news, photos of recent work, a short post every week or two signals activity and gives searchers a reason to choose you.
Keep it consistent everywhere
Your name, address and phone number must match exactly across your website, directories and social pages. Mismatches confuse Google and quietly sink your ranking. Consistency is boring and it works.
