How to measure your AI visibility
You can't improve what you don't measure. Here's how to check whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI actually recommend your business.
Measuring AI visibility sounds technical, but the simplest method is also the most honest: ask the AI the questions your customers would, and see whether your name comes back. You don't need a dashboard to start, you need a list of real prompts and ten minutes.
Run the prompts a customer would type
Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask things like "best [your service] in [your town]" or "who should I call for [your service] near me." Note whether you appear, where, and which competitors get named instead. That snapshot is your baseline.
Check the inputs the AI reads
Look at your Google profile completeness, your review count and recency, and whether your business details match across the web. These are the levers behind the answers, so tracking them tells you why you do or don't appear.
Watch referral traffic from AI tools
Your website analytics can show visits coming from ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI-powered search. A rising trickle from those sources is direct proof your visibility is improving, not just a feeling.
Re-test on a schedule
AI answers shift as your signals and your competitors change. Re-running the same prompts monthly turns a one-off check into a trend, so you can see whether your work is moving the needle.
What good looks like
You're named in answers for your core services, your profile and reviews are strong and current, and you see steady referral visits from AI tools. If you're not there yet, the gaps in those inputs tell you exactly what to fix first.
